Connected Speech Services

Our Approach to Intervention

At Connected Speech, we assume competence and expect ability by prioritizing verbal language for those with Down syndrome. Our team of experienced SLPs use evidence-based practice combined with expertise and compassion to deliver personalized therapy sessions tailored to the specific needs of each client. Through our interactive teletherapy platform, individuals can receive high-quality speech therapy in authentic daily environments, ensuring meaningful practice and better outcomes with the added benefit of convenience and flexibility.

  • Virtual one-on-one sessions

  • In-person sessions (rare, but sometimes possible depending on location)

  • Hybrid in-person & Virtual sessions

  • Intensive Speech Programs: LSVT LOUD

We strive to provide therapy frequency (dosage) according to evidence-based practice that recommends more frequent weekly sessions of shorter durations (e.g., 2-4 times each week/20-30 minutes). Less frequent therapy dosage is not as effective for lasting change.

Consultations

At Connected Speech, we assume competence and expect ability by educating others about how to prioritize verbal language for those with Down syndrome. Our team of experienced Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) offer consults to share evidence-based practice with expertise and compassion to deliver personalized consultations for those who may not be familiar with how Down syndrome affects speech, language, feeding, academic learning, social skills, and executive functioning. We also provide consultation services to those living in other states and countries where we do not hold licenses to practice or accept private insurance for reimbursement.

We hope to share our expertise with others to improve the quality of care people with Down syndrome need to thrive. Consultations are a great option for:

  • People with Down syndrome

  • Parents/Families

  • Caretakers

Speech Clarity

Speech Clarity is how speech is used by a speaker and understood by a listener. Accurately saying specific sounds or short single words does not improve speech clarity in connected speech. This is why traditional articulation therapy is ineffective for improved clarity when saying more than one word at a time. Those with Down syndrome who have multiple speech disorders simultaneously require speech practice that caters to the unique profiles of those with Down syndrome.

Our Down syndrome specialists are trained to treat the specific speech needs of those with Down syndrome according to their strengths in other areas of communication. We use multiple techniques based on the unique presentation of each person. Not all children and adults with Down syndrome need the same therapy, but techniques tailored to the specific needs of those with Down syndrome produce superior outcomes.

Given the choice to use speech or non-speech communication, over 90% of those with Down syndrome will choose to use speech to communicate, even in the absence of success.

Services for Teens & Adults

Clear speech is essential for effective communication. It allows individuals to express their thoughts, feelings, and needs. For children with Down syndrome, developing speech clarity can enhance their ability to interact with peers, family, and educators to foster social connections and emotional well-being.

As individuals with Down syndrome grow into adulthood, clear speech becomes crucial for self-advocacy. Adults need to communicate their desires, needs, and rights effectively in various settings, including the workplace, healthcare, and community engagement. Speech clarity empowers them to be heard and respected.

Speech clarity plays a significant role in social interactions. When individuals can communicate more effectively, it helps reduce frustration and misunderstandings in social situations. This is particularly important for children, as clear communication enhances their ability to make friends and participate in group activities.

In educational settings, clear speech contributes to better learning outcomes. Children who can articulate their thoughts clearly are more likely to engage in classroom discussions, ask questions, and express their understanding of material. This can lead to increased confidence and academic achievement.

Clear communication is foundational to building and maintaining relationships. Whether with family, friends, or colleagues, the ability to convey thoughts and feelings clearly helps foster deeper connections and mutual understanding.
